Our Mission

The mission of Saint Stephen’s United Methodist Church is“to lead people to a loving relationship with Jesus Christ.”

This is our mission statement. It is a declaration of how we collectively conduct ourselves in our relationship with others. This statement is the test for every mission, ministry, service, and fellowship opportunity. If we cannot answer how we are leading people to a loving relationship with Jesus Christ with our activity, then we must question why we are doing it.

Being passive is not acceptable. We will seek out opportunities to meet the needs of others and act upon them appropriately. It is the loving, nurturing, caring, kind, encouraging guidance and spiritual development that will meet church and community needs and change lives. Our mission is to create and sustain ministry, outreach and education that employs the name and teaching of Jesus Christ as the relevant solution to today’s problems and tomorrow’s challenges.

Our History

The origin of St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church is steeped in the rich history of the town of Delmar. It is a shared history that reflects community involvement, growth and leadership, beginning a mere eight years after the Delaware Railroad extended itself to the southern border of Delaware in 1859.

Our history at St. Stephen’s reflects how pastors and laity preceding today’s church leadership found it necessary to change in order to meet the needs of the community and the church itself. God placed in their path financial challenges, mergers with other churches, facilities that required repair and/or replacement, and meeting the spiritual needs of a growing community.
God has always provided a way for this church to meet needs and challenges. He has always had a plan for us and He still holds a place in His heart for this church named Saint Stephen’s.
